SUMMARY

  • Susan Twist’s extremely brief cameo in “Rogue” hints at a larger story arc in Doctor Who season 14.
  • The mystery of Susan Twist’s characters and their connections to specific eras in history deepens in the latest episode.
  • Despite the lack of context in “Rogue,” Susan Twist’s presence continues to intrigue viewers as the season progresses.

Doctor Who season 14, episode 6, “Rogue,” features a Susan Twist cameo so brief that the blink of an eye can cause it to be missed. The actress’ presence among the Doctor Who season 14 cast has slowly been growing more prominent, with her “Rogue” cameo bucking that particular trend. Twist has been present in almost every episode of Doctor Who‘s Disney era so far, being absent from only the first and final episodes of David Tennant’s return trilogy for the 60th anniversary celebrations. However, while her mysterious character does appear in the Bridgerton-inspired installment, Susan Twist herself does not.

“Rogue” feels very much like a self-contained adventure, with Susan Twist’s subtle cameo serving as a rare reference to the larger story arc of Doctor Who season 14. With Gatwa’s first season as the Fifteenth Doctor drawing to a close, the answer to the mystery of Susan Twist is surely on the horizon. That being said, “Rogue” offers up very little context for the actress’ ongoing ubiquity.

Susan Twist’s Cameo In Doctor Who Season 14, Episode 6 Explained

Twist’s Doctor Who character appears only as a painting in “Rogue”

Many of Twist’s Doctor Who season 14 cameos have been brief, with her most prominent role coming in “Boom” as the ambulance AI on Kastarion 3. However, her appearance in “Rogue” can barely be called a cameo at all. Roughly five minutes into the episode, Ruby recognizes a portrait on the wall but fails to properly realize who she’s looking at. The implication is that the figure in the painting is Susan Twist, embodying yet another Doctor Who character.

Susan Twist’s Doctor Who Characters Leading Up To “Rogue”
Character Episode
Mrs. Merridrew Wild Blue Yonder
Unnamed audience member The Church on Ruby Road
Gina Scalzi Space Babies
Tea lady The Devil’s Chord
Ambulance Boom
Hiker 73 Yards
Penny Pepper-Bean Dot and Bubble
The Duchess’ mother-in-law (In a painting) Rogue

The woman in the painting is difficult to identify as Susan Twist, and it marks the first time in the Disney era that one of her cameos hasn’t used her actual face. She has appeared remotely in episodes like “Boom” and “Space Babies,” but Twist has always provided a performance in one way or another. In “Rogue,” she is essentially not involved with the production, breaking her impressive streak.

The Duke’s mother is the second blood-relation played by Susan Twist

Indira Varma’s Duchess character identifies the woman in the painting as “The Duke’s late mother.” This means Twist is related to a character within the episode, which was also true of Twist’s Penny Pepper-Bean persona in “Dot and Bubble.”Penny was the birth mother of Callie Cooke’s Lindy Pepper-Bean, so the Duchess’ mother-in-law marks the second time a Susan Twist character has played someone ingrained within a family tree within the episode.

This strong connection to a specific era in history reinforces the theory that, whoever Susan Twist is playing, she isn’t just a traditional time traveler hopping through the centuries. Instead, what’s perhaps more likely is that all the Twist characters are something of an echo of a specific figure. However, only the future of Doctor Who season 14 will be able to confirm any kind of truth about Susan Twist’s presence throughout the Disney era so far.
