Matt Smith, Peter Capaldi, and Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor

SUMMARY

  • Moffat hints at a potential Doctor Who crossover episode with Ncuti Gatwa, Matt Smith, and Peter Capaldi characters getting along in a funny dynamic.
  • The Gatwa and Smith Doctors would be friends, while Capaldi’s Doctor might act like a grumpy school teacher in a boy band with the others.
  • Moffat’s quirky ideas for a crossover episode involve Ncuti and Matt as fun school kids and Capaldi as the mischievous teacher in a band.
teven Moffat has some bizarre ideas about how the next Doctor Who crossover episode might play out. Moffat, who earned acclaim for writing Doctor Who season 1, episodes 9 and 10, “The Empty Child” and “The Doctor Dances”, was the showrunner from 2010 to 2017. He led all of Matt Smith’s era and part of Peter Capaldi’s, before passing the show to Chris Chibnall. Moffat recently returned to write season 14, episode 3, “Boom”. He returned to a Doctor Who cast led by the new Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa.

Moffat spoke with Screen Rant‘s Caitlin Tyrrell about Gatwa’s Doctor and hinted at how a potential crossover episode would play out. If Gatwa’s Doctor met with Peter Capaldi and Matt Smith, Moffat expects that Gatwa and Smith’s characters would get along well. Capaldi’s Doctor, however, would likely be a “grumpy school teacher“, who would “play the guitar” with his counterparts and “start a boy band“. Check out his full quote below:

What would they think? The David and the Matt doctors always got on really well. They just liked each other. I think Capaldi would be grumpy about the other two not being proper doctors like him. I think Matt and Ncuti’s doctors would just have a giggle together and run around and say, “This is cool. You change your clothes all the time. I’m going to do that now!” I think that would be funny. That would actually be quite a funny threesome. Ncuti and Matt would be the naughty school kids, and Capaldi would be the grumpy school teacher who’s actually even naughtier than they are, and they’d all play the guitar. They’d start a boy band.

Moffat’s Ideas For The Next Doctor Who Crossover

While A Boy Band Isn’t Likely, Moffat’s Plans Would Work

In the next crossover, Moffat imagines a three-Doctor crossover featuring Smith, Gatwa, and Capaldi as the Eleventh, Fifteenth, and Twelfth Doctors. The younger and more whimsical Smith and Gatwa would more easily connect and bond, while Capaldi would slowly reveal his own whimsy over time. Originally, Capaldi would be more difficult for the other two to connect with. Nearly every Doctor’s actors have returned for crossovers, so a special episode featuring all three would not be unprecedented. Unfortunately, most of those episodes have extreme stakes, making the boy band idea unlikely.

Still, there is potential behind Moffat’s plans for the next Doctor Who crossover. Since Russell T Davies originally left Doctor Who after David Tennant’s original tenure ended, there have been four major Doctors who have taken his place: Matt Smith, Peter Capaldi, Jodie Whittaker, and Ncuti Gatwa. Moffat likely only named Capaldi and Smith because he controlled their eras, but Whittaker would also be an interesting addition to the cast, given that she was the last major Doctor before Gatwa’s run.

Gatwa’s Doctor has already crossed over with another, as his introductory episode featured him interacting with David Tennant’s Fourteenth Doctor. The Fifteenth Doctor worked to convince the Fourteenth to spend time as a normal civilian for the foreseeable future, before going on to duplicate his TARDIS and begin a journey of his own. His relationship with Tennant’s Doctor proved that Gatwa’s has a friendly and welcoming personality. Moffat is right that he and the other modern Doctors would get along well in a future Doctor Who crossover.
