Doctor Who’s Ncuti Gatwa ‘yet to make decision’ on future as Time Lord, says boss Russell T Davies
The Sex Education favourite Ncuti Gatwa will play Doctor Who in the upcoming series two – but has so far refused to say if he will stay on beyond this commitment
Doctor Who boss Russell T Davies says “no decision” has been made on the line up for the next series of the show.
Ncuti Gatwa is the current Timelord and has filmed his second series in the TARDIS. At Comic Con this week, Doctor Who supremo Russell T Davies said “no decisions” had been made about how long the Sex Education star’s time would last.
Asked by the host at Comic Con in San Diego, California on Friday: ‘How much longer will this era last?’ – with Ncuti and Millie Gibson at the helm – Russell answered: “We’ve shot season two, but that’s only halfway through.
“We’ve got all those months of post to come. It’s a long way off, so no decisions yet. We are happy making it at the moment – we hope it continues forever.” Trying to coax more information out of the trio, the host teased: ‘Alright, so you guys have signed up for 10 seasons is what you’re telling me?’ Ncuti smiled: “Of course!” Millie added: “I’m not doing any other work right now.” Russell laughed: “Lock the doors!”

It comes after US outlets claimed the series two plot leaves Ncuti’s future “open-ended” – for the possibility that Ncuti walks away if the Disney deal falters. Ncuti admitted it had taken him two years to get a handle on the role. He said playing the Doctor was “surreal”, and added: “Still now, it is a pinch-me moment.
Christopher Eccleston quit after his first series in 2005, while Jodie Whittaker – the first female Doctor – lasted three series and five specials. So will Ncuti regenerate into his successor? We’ll have to wait and see…
